The Worst Passwords of 2020

Désolé, cet article est seulement disponible en en et ru.

The worst passwords of the year have become a tradition. Do you remember, in 2019, we published a ranking of the 100 most unsuccessful passwords? 2020 will be no exception, especially since experts have analyzed more than 5 billion leaked passwords, and there is a lot to be surprised about.

Some introductions

Experts conducted the first password study in 2017, and since then have analyzed 33.3 billion username/password pairs. Where does the data come from? The sources are various communities that deal with recovering passwords from hashes (e.g. hashes.org) and underground forums where mass leaks are posted to the public access. Further, the data is cleaned up from blank and repetitive entries, and auto-generated passwords are removed.

Major leaks 2020

Before we move on to the ranking, it’s worth remembering the biggest leaks of the year. The experts have stressed that the numbers in the list below are not the size of the leak, but the number of « decrypted » passwords available at the time of this study. And so, let’s move on to the list:

53 million – social network Netlog.com

48 million online community for writers and readers Wattpad.com
